Name Change for the Ministry of Agriculture

There has been a name change for the Ministry of Agriculture.  Earlier this week we told you that the portfolio was divided, and Omar Figueroa was made a substantive minister to head the Ministry of Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, and Sustainable Development.  Figueroa takes over from Godwin Hulse who held that portfolio up to Tuesday, February 18.

The other change made to Hulse’s portfolio is an adjustment to the ministry’s name.  Officially, it is now the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and Immigration.  Love News understands that the insertion of ‘Food’ in the ministry’s name has to do with Belize’s collaboration with the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and to align it with the Parliamentary Alliance Against Hunger and Malnutrition that has full support from Belize’s Parliament.  The Alliance in Belize is chaired by the Speaker of the House, Laura Tucker-Longsworth.  The ministry as the lead ministry in food production, food processing, is poised to give effect to this mandate to improve nutrition across the country and to ensure that the millennium goals of eliminating hunger and malnutrition by the year 2030 is achieved.  Based on previous interviews with Hulse, it is a milestone as this was something he had been lobbying for since taking over the ministry in 2017.  Love News understands that the Governor-General signed the portfolio reassignment order on Wednesday, February 19.
