The National Assembly of Belize joined countries around the world today in observing International Day of Parliamentarism. The United Nations set aside June 20th for this observation back in 2018, to mark the 1889 founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. In a statement issued today, the National Assembly said that the celebrates parliaments’ crucial role in democracy, accountability, and representing the people. The National Assembly noted quote, “Parliaments are vital to governance, enacting laws, approving budgets, and overseeing executive actions. They serve as forums for diverse views and public debate,” end of quote. To mark the day, the staff of the national assembly held internal events focused on staff wellness, service recognition, and unity. This year’s International Day of Parliamentarism was observed under the theme “From the top to the foundation, everyone has a part to play. Together, we are Parliament.”
