National Junior Basketball Tryouts Kick Off at Civic Center

Around 50 student athletes around age 14 gathered at the Belize Civic Center today, vying for a spot on the National Junior Basketball Team. The Ministry of Sports and the Belize Basketball Federation (BBF) will be traveling throughout the country, holding tryouts at the district level to find emerging talent. The aim is to assemble a team that will represent Belize in the Under-15 Centro Basketball competition next year. President of the BBF, Jacob Leslie, says that the total pool of student athletes that make it past tryouts is estimated at a hundred, but only 12 will make it onto the team.

Head Coach Bernie Tarr said that while talent is desired, he personally looks at a player’s ability to listen and play well with others.

The last stop on the national tryouts tour will be the Orange Walk Multi-Purpose Complex on July 27.
