The National Meteorological Service of Belize received a donation of equipment today to assist in getting critical weather and climate data to the agriculture sector. The donation, valued at fifty-seven thousand US dollars includes six desktop computers, six laptop computers, servers, routers, and other equipment which will be used in the AgroMet section of the National Met Service. The equipment was donated under the Resilient Rural Belize Project, in collaboration with the Green Climate Fund and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management Orlando Habet explained how the data generated by the Met Service will assist farmers.
Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Economic Development, Dr Osmond Martinez also attended the handing over ceremony and explained that the donation forms a part of a project valued over five hundred thousand dollars. He explained why the focus was made on the production of data.
The National Met Service says that the equipment will also make it possible to generate data that will benefit sectors outside of agriculture.
