During the ongoing Budget Debate in the National Assembly, Minister of National Defence and Border Security, Minister Oscar Mira, took a moment to commend his ministry’s team for their swift and dedicated work in launching expected reforms within the sector. Addressing fellow parliamentarians, Minister Mira expressed his “deep gratitude” to the staff and leadership within the Ministry, emphasizing that they have “hit the ground running” in implementing crucial changes aimed at strengthening national defense capabilities and modernizing border security. Though full details of the reform plan are yet to be publicly outlined, the Minister’s remarks hint at a comprehensive strategy already in motion, promising enhanced security infrastructure, improved personnel training, and upgraded surveillance technology along Belize’s borders.

Oscar Mira, Minister of National Defence: “From the moment the responsibility of being the Minister of National Defence and Border Security was entrusted in me by our Prime Minister, my team and I have hit the ground running. And I mean, literally running. We have accomplished a lot. We have completed an analysis of our borders and territorial waters including a visit to each conservation post along the Western border, along the southern border, and the Hunting Key Forward Operating Base. And I have asked and deployed the staff officers within my ministry to conduct an analysis of Fairweather Camp and the Sarstoon Forward Observation Base, Operating Base.”
Minister Mira was recently made the substantive minister for national defence and border security.
