National Trade Union Congress Expresses Concerns Over Foreign Senior Court Judges
The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) is registering concerns in the importation of senior court judges. The group sent out a release today saying it is a sad situation that the Judicial and Legal Services Commission (JLSC) cannot find Belizeans to administer justice to our people. The release goes further to say that, ‘something is seriously rotten in the State of Belize when only 1 of our 18 Senior Court Judges, including the Chief Justice, is Belizean born. This shows the level of regression that Belize has come to. We are now dependent on foreigners to administer justice in Belize. These foreigners do not have any cultural references or ties to our society yet enjoy the perks of these high offices. The NTUCB deems this akin to the days of colonialism. All twelve High Court Judges are foreign-born. Such a measure should only have been temporary and should have been a part of a strategy by the JLSC to develop the capacity of local talent to fill judicial posts in the medium and long term.” End of quote. We will have more on this in tomorrow’s newscast.
