National Volleyball Championships Set for Two Action-Packed Weekends

Volleyball fans are in for back-to-back weekends of high-level games, with the upcoming women’s and men’s national championships. Teams from all over the country will be facing off at the Countryside Park in Spanish Lookout, beginning this Friday night with the women’s championships. Allan Sharp, president of the Belize Volleyball Association says that there will be 14 teams in the women’s championships and 16 teams in the men’s. Sharp said that players and teams have been training hard leading up to the games to give fans a memorable experience.

Allan Sharp, President, Belize Volleyball Association: “14 teams teams Orange Walk, PG, Belmopan, Cayo, Belize City, you know all over teams are coming in well they’ll be going to Countryside Park to play the national championship. It’s always very exciting the teams the matches start from Friday night at 6 p.m. in Spanish Lookout then Saturday we start up back at 10 a.m. goes all day into the night with the playoff matches starting at about 6 p.m in the night and then Sunday is the semifinals and the final matches that happen on Sunday and determine the champion all in one weekend. And then the following weekend, back-to-back weekends, we have then the Men’s National Championship and that has 16 teams it’s full because we limit it at 16. It’s the first time ever that we’ve filled it so fast. So it’s all 16 teams will be there vying and in both competitions, it’s always very, very competitive. This is the highest level of volleyball. This is some of the best players. These are players from the national team playing with their club teams at the national level. I mean, I think this year, in fact, I know this year is going to be hard and it’s ever been the level of volleyball is going to be incredible, both in the men and the women. It also gives everybody a sight of national team players because this year there’s so many national programs national team that have to play. The under 23 will be going out we’ll be hosting an international tournament this year there’s the Central American Games where the men and women will be playing in the month of October so you get to see the players. Come out, support, it’s the best volleyball you’re going to see that you can see. We are playing as a country at a very high level. So when you come out you enjoy great day, family event, great volleyball.”
The volleyball association also held special training for referees leading up to the tournaments to ensure matches are called correctly.
