The National Commission of Families and Children (NCFC) has a new chairperson. According to the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Maria Elena Contreras has been appointed to fill the post. The release further describes Contreras as someone who quote “brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge in public service to Belize” Unquote. Contreras was previously a manager at the Social Security Board. The Ministry adds that her maturity and skills in management will be essential to guide the commission forward. The release adds quote “Her commitment to the families and children of Belize is unwavering, and her energy to coordinate and lead the NCFC is solid as proven by her record.” Contreras will lead the statutory body, comprised of multi-sectoral members. The body is legally mandated to promote, monitor and evaluate Belize’s compliance with its national and international commitments to children. The NCFC is the major advisory body to the government on families and children’s issues. Contreras takes over from Arreini Palacio-Morgan, who resigned back in May.
