The National Drug Abuse Control Council (NDACC) held a special traffic stop in downtown Belize City this morning as part of its national awareness campaign against drinking and driving. NDACC set up the checkpoint on Albert Street just before the intersection with King Street, to speak with drivers about various road safety issues. Dejana Dawson, Belize District Coordinator for NDACC explained that the council strategically holds the awareness checkpoints just before major celebrations, as people are more inclined to drink and drive due to the festivities.

Dejana Dawson, Belize District Coordinator, NDACC: “We know that September is the month of celebrations so we just want to remind the general public to be safe. You know they want to party, have fun tat’s okay but there’s a safer way to do it right ? So we have a traffic stop today just handing out pamphlets reminding and also encouraging our citizens to be safe this weekend. Quick tips are if you’re going out ensure that you have a designated driver because we want everybody to get to and from their destination safely and to just have fun but clean safe fun. So we usually plan two of these in September as I said. The first one is before the 10th and the other one is close to the second carnival which is this weekend Tomorrow. This is Independence weekend so we want to remind them again to be safe this weekend. It’s not only to not drink and drive but also texting, drinking and driving also pose a risk. So as I said have a designated driver and know your limits so that is one of the important messages that we ensured we pushed today. At this time most people are out. This is downtown Belize you cannot not have traffic here so we decided to have it here. Most of the citizens usually pass this side, this is a Main Street so we decided to have ur stop here this morning. We know the accidents usually happen at night but we also want to encourage them earlier in the day, today is Friday as well to not drink and drive safely.”
NDACC has been holding similar traffic stops all over the country this month
