NEMO distributing relief to families affected by wildfires

The start of the rainy season was welcome news to residents in the Cayo and Toledo districts who were affected by bushfires.  While the rain However, the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) says that the work continues. National Emergency Coordinator Daniel Mendez told Love News that over four hundred families have been affected by the fires and are in need of aid. NEMO is currently balancing the distribution of relief supplies to those affected while also conducting damage assessments to determine the full impact of the fires. Mendez also noted that the arrival of the rains means that NEMO has to brace for other natural disasters.

Mendez explained that the fires damaged thousands of hectares of forest, which will have a major environmental impact. He noted that recovery efforts must be comprehensive and require input from a large group of stakeholders, as they consider interventions such as reforestation.

NEMO is currently working on compiling data from all its partners to develop a recovery strategy which will guide interventions going forward.
