NEMO Officials Detail Final Safety Preparations on Caye Caulker

This evening, our newsroom also heard from Vanessa Parham NEMO’s Emergency Coordinator for Belize Rural South, Caye Caulker’s Chairwoman Seleny Pott, and Officer in Charge of Caye Caulker Amilcar Milan. Love News heard about final preparations being made and how the working group has put measures in place to prioritize safety for islanders.

Vanessa Parham, NEMO Coordinator: “The only shelter we have available if the roman Catholic School. So if you are making any preparations or if you’re planning to go to the shelter then I kindly ask you to prepare to take your own disaster kit, you’re own food, your own supplies, your own documents especially your medications. With that said I’d like to remind everybody that this is a community effort, you have a duty to yourself, a duty to your family and a duty to this beautiful village of Caye Caulker.”

Selena Post, Chairwoman, Caye Caulker: “We have to continue with all the necessary preparations. Everybody who is on the island now must seek safe shelter and we must prepare our family with our emergency plan. I think everything else is set in motion. So we just have to hunker down and prepare for what is head of us.”

Amilcar Milan, Officer Commanding Caye Caulker: “At six o’clock there will be closing hours for liquor. We’re asking the various establishments or the business places that old liquor licenses to please cooperate with us. There will be the announcement to be made at six o’clock and thereafter police officers will be enforcing the law. So I ask that you guys be mindful that it’s an offense if you guys sell liquor after that you have been informed and the announcement has been made. So I ask for your cooperation. I also want to advise that there will be extra patrols starting from tonight at seven o’clock. We know that some residents have left their houses already in the evacuation leaving their houses unsafe so it is our duty as the police officers to maintain the island as safe as possible.”

A tropical storm watch remains in place for Caye Caulker and San Pedro islands.
