NEMO Coordinator Daniel Mendez says with just 67 days left in the Atlantic Hurricane Season, his team remains vigilant and ready to respond. To date, the season has seen seven named storms with the US National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasting 13–19 named storms, 6–10 hurricanes, and 3–5 major hurricanes. Although there are no tropical cyclones in the immediate vicinity of Belize, the recent rains have caused flooding in some areas which NEMO says they are monitoring.

Daniel Mendez, National Emergency Coordinator, NEMO: “So we maintain communication with the villages and so we are aware of when things are going to happen and so we are able to mobilize support to those villages that are or those communities that are affected by the localized flooding. Generally, what we want to do is to be able to ensure that the villages can handle these themselves. And so we support those villages and providing them the things that they need. So we know that there have been a few flooding issues. We put out a statement yesterday of areas that have been affected and we continue to monitor those throughout the season. So it’s again, like I said, NEMO is a complete system where it not only relies on us the ones who wear the NEMO shirt but all of the villages and the town councils are makeup. And so we receive information from them and we share information with them as well and so that’s our way of maintaining that state of readiness in order for us to be able to know, and more importantly, give people early warning so that they know what will happen, hence our collaboration with the Met Service and the Hydrology Service.”
