NEMO Validates Disaster Management Audit Ahead of 2024 Hurricane Season

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) met with its various partners yesterday to validate an audit of the country’s disaster management apparatus. NEMO held the validation exercise for the Comprehensive Disaster Management Audit at its headquarters in Belmopan. Representatives from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) also participated in the exercise. NEMO’s National Emergency Coordinator, Daniel Mendez, explained that the audit pointed to areas in disaster management that are being done well while highlighting areas that need improvement. He added that the validation is timely since the 2024 hurricane season will start soon.

Chris Chin, Senior Program Officer with CDEMA, explained that the validation exercise was supported by the Building Resilience of the CARIFORUM States (BRICS) project. Meanwhile, Deborah Brown, Disaster Recover Specialist with CDEMA, explained how the information from the audit shapes the country’s national program for disaster management.

NEMO is also preparing to launch an awareness campaign to foster better information sharing and dissemination with national emergency management stakeholders and the public.
