The Governor General, Froyla Tzalam, swore in a new Justice to the Court of Appeal in Belize. During a virtual ceremony, Tzalam congratulated and welcomed Justice of Appeal, Dr. Christopher Arif (ah-reef) Bulkan (bull-can), adding that she is impressed with the quality of experience that Bulkan brings to Belize and sees it as an asset to the country’s justice system. Attorney General, Magali Marin-Young joined the virtual ceremony and noted that Bulkan has sat as a justice on the Court of Appeal bench in Guyana and has experience in human rights and criminal law background as well as experience as a law lecturer and published writer on constitutional law. With his background in human rights law, Bulkan has been involved in human rights advocacy and has worked to establish and defend the rights of marginalized persons in society, including indigenous peoples, the LGBTQ community and persons living with HIV/AIDS. Tzalam stated that Bulkan’s service to Belize’s court is a plus and she looks forward to reading his judgements.
