A name has been selected for the new structure being built at the corner of Queen and North Front Streets in Belize City.  Following a competition by the Belize City House of Culture and Downtown Rejuvenation Project, the name, Belize Heritage Plaza was selected as the winning submission.  Credit has been given to Eddie Middleton.  The competition was done via online voting for two weeks in October.  Middleton received just over thirty percent of the votes while Phaedra Mohammed-Ali placed second with the name Emancipation Plaza and coming in third was Colin Gillett with the name, Freedom Square.  Popularly known as ground zero, the site once housed the Paslow Building which was set on fire in September 2002.  The Paslow Building was the home to the post office, Magistrates’ Court rooms and the Lands Department.  According to Chief Librarian, Lawrence Vernon, the Paslow Building was built in the 1920s.  It first housed the Belize Store and was sold in 1931 to the Belize Estate and Produce Company who later sold it to the Government of Belize.  Investigations into the suspected case of arson fell apart in 2005 after Ivan Ayuso was charged a few days after the inferno.  The Belize Heritage Plaza is slated for completion in early 2020
