Newly appointed government Senator Brittany Galvez has pledged to be a voice for women and youth in the upper house of parliament. Prior to her appointment, she served as the Program Coordinator in the Office of the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children, where she contributed to initiatives promoting gender equality, children’s rights, special education, and mental health. In November 2020, the thirty-year-old was appointed as the Public Relations Officer for the Belize Chapter of the Caribbean Women in Leadership (CiWiL), an organization dedicated to increasing women’s participation in leadership and decision-making across the Caribbean. Speaking at a recent women’s empowerment forum, Galvez explained that a love of country and community will guide her in her new role.
Galvez is the second youngest female Senator with the first being Audrey Matura, who was appointed at age 28 in 1998 by the United Democratic Party as an Opposition Senator.
