NEXTERA responds to Environmental NGOs

Nextera Environmental and Engineering Consultants Company says its latest Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) report removes the offshore dredging component of Waterloo’s Port of Belize Expansion Project. Nextera responded to the Belize Network of NGOs in a letter in which it explains that the new ESIA report differs from the previous versions submitted to the National Environmental Appraisal Committee (NEAC). The letter says (quote) “In an effort to assuage these concerns, and through our Project’s detailed designed efforts, we identified an environmentally viable alternative to offshore placement through the use of an expanded nearshore disposal site within the project envelope. On this basis, we have completely removed the offshore placement scope from the project and no construction activities will now take place outside the project envelope in the immediate vicinity of the existing port facility.” (end quote) The letter went on to say that apart from the removal of the offshore dredging aspect, the amended ESIA report yielded six other requests from NEAC. This includes nearshore placement containment, a flood risk assessment, hydrodynamic modelling timeframe, updated nearshore bathymetry, Lands and Survey Department consultation and Port Loyola consultation. Nextera is the company hired by Waterloo Ltd. to undertake its recent Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.
