NFSS Initiates DNA Database Project: Collection of Genetic Samples Underway

The National Forensics Science Service (NFSS) is working to establish an in-country deoxyribonucleic (dee-ak-see-rai-bow-no-klay-uhk) acid (DNA) testing database. The NFSS has embarked on the journey, which includes implementing several legislation and training sessions. Today, the organization embarked on the first phase of its population study by collecting gene samples from volunteers to calculate frequency statistics from their genetic profiles. The event was held at the University of Belize’s campus in Belmopan and was geared toward collecting as many samples as possible. NFSS’s Executive Director, Gian Cho, spoke about the purpose of the venture and how it will impact the way authorities fight crime.

It was the second event held by the NFSS. The entity recently held a similar initiative at a military base and plans to hold a drive in Belize City. Cho says the NFSS has so far not been able to garner much support and explained that it is important for Belizeans to take part in the study.

Cho says the study will take an estimated one year and a half to complete. ////
