Nine Taiwanese Students Enroll at the University of Belize for English Studies

9 Taiwanese students have enrolled at the University of Belize to study English. The students embarked on their academic journey under the Certificate in English as a Second Language (CESL) scholarship program. Mandarin Teacher for Taiwan Technical Mission Snow Chen, spoke to Love News about the initiative.

Snow Chen, Mandarin Teacher, Taiwan Technical Mission: “Everything we have done for this we hope to expand and strengthen the relations between Taiwan and Belize. So by facilitating the language and culture like Taiwan students come here to learn English and the Belizean students learn the language. Scholarship programs so they will have a class every day in the morning until afternoon I think at 3:30PM. And offered in this year we will provide a field trip of cultural events to let them display their culture because as far as I know so far there are ten countries here and before it was only three students from Taiwan the most but this year it’s a really big group in AOC. So I think now the Taiwanese students is the second biggest group among these international students. So I hope that maybe the next students they will introduce more Taiwan culture to the Belizeans or to the other national students.”

The students will be residing in Belize for the duration of the 1-year course. One of the scholarship students, Lin Pocheng, says he is excited to get the Belize experience.

Lin Pocheng, Student: “First I want to improve my English by all English environment. Also there are many classmates from different countries so it is a good environment but also a chance to open my eyes by making friends from around the world. Secondly I believe that the future central will be in Belize. They are the only English speaking country in Central America therefore I hope to catch the opportunity by joining this program and experiencing first hand Belize. Thank you.”

The CESL program is just one of the many initiatives that foster youth and cultural exchanges, fortifying the bilateral ties between Taiwan and Belize.
