Nineteen Nurses Complete Training in Midwifery at the UB

The University of Belize has certified nineteen registered nurses in Midwifery through a sponsorship from the Ministry of Health and Wellness. This morning an achievement and appreciation ceremony was held at the Belize Biltmore Plaza for the participants that completed the Midwifery Program. The eighteen-month course began back in January of 2021 through a partnership with UB and MOHW. The nurses who took part were selected from across the country with the aim of improving the country’s health sector. Registered nurse, William Palma, who was one of the two males that participated in the training, spoke to Love News about the experience and knowledge he gained in the course.

Deputy Director of Health Services and Chief Nursing Officer at the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Lizett Bell says there is a significant shortage of midwives in the country and echoed the importance of training more nurses in midwifery.

Bell added that another round of training is expected to commence in June.
