A single mother who lost her home in Belize City due to heavy rains is asking for assistance from the public and government in rebuilding. Thalia Westby explained to Love News that she visited the Women’s Commission but was frustrated at the response that she received. She added that she has been trying to acquire funds for her house by selling plant pottery but that alone is not enough.
Thalia Westby, Homeowner: “The concern with materials I went to the Women’s Department and they told me it’s not guaranteed that it would be approved for me to get any material yesterday. So the young lady told me why I didn’t build the house over with the same material and stuff, what are my plans, and they really roughed me up yesterday until I left from there very depressed, frustrated. So I don’t know what is the step to do. I’m trying to get assistance on my own so that I could do it because I don’t like how I got caught up in a political thing between the two parties you know ? So I’m trying to get an estimate done to get the material and go to the business places so that I could try to see how I could get even one 2×4 whatever they can help me with I’m trying to do that tomorrow because I need to get back in a home, I need to get my life stable again for my children, they need to be in their own home. My eleven year old when we were trying to fill in the sand his little hands are blistered because he’s trying to shovel up the sand. My kids don’t have to go through that you know ? My little baby she cries. One spell I said my kids don’t deserve me to have them like this you know I feel hopeless like I can’t do anything. So I’m just asking for them to help me just even if it’s a one bed room house so that we can go back to live. The lady that is helping us right now she doesn’t treat us bad or anything but those kids are already big, they already know that we have to move from there soon.”
Westby is worried about not having a home in time for when school reopens. She added that if persons assist her financially or with resources they can contact 625-5543.
