Police are also yet to levy any internal charges against Sergeant Devon Makin, the cop who was caught on camera pistol-whipping an alleged gunman. This month, footage of Makin kicking and pistol-whipping a man in San Pedro sparked outrage among the public. Many felt the officer’s actions were excessive and called for him to be penalized. However, his godfather, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, argued the cop’s actions, except for hitting the man with his pistol, were justified. Nonetheless, the Professional Standards Branch was ordered to investigate and determine whether Makin would face disciplinary action. However, according to Williams, a decision is yet to be made.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “It’s a matter that we’re dealing with internally as well. The file will be handed over to me I think today or tomorrow and then we make our decision on that matter.”
Reporter: But is he still a wanted man ?
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “I will have to go through the file and see what the file contains.”
According to Williams, Makin was heading home when he was approached by two minors who were being chased by an armed man. Makin responded and moved to apprehend Ryan Melendez. Melendez has since gone to the San Pedro Police Station with his attorney, but he was not charged. To date, police have not charged anyone for the alleged incident Makin responded to nor has the firearm allegedly used by Melendez been recovered.
