The broadcast of the Tokyo Olympics is expected to start at six o’clock tomorrow morning on the international stations. Up to tonight, however, there are some issues as the channels broadcasting the event will have to be taken off the various cable networks. As we understand it, the company, Concord Media Group, has bought exclusive rights from the International Media Content Limited. A release from the Belize Cable TV Operators has noted that due to an impasse with Concord Media Group, the event will not be carried by local cable operators. The release further notes, quote, “The Belize Cable TV Operators Association, as the negotiation representative for cable rights on behalf of cable operators, has also engaged SportMax to gain rights for the 2020 Olympics broadcast. The costs now quoted from SportsMax for cable rights have sky-rocketed far beyond what the BCTVOA and its membership can reasonably afford within the current cost of cable packages for subscribers. For all prior Olympics Games before this one, local broadcasters Channel 5 and Channel 7 have been able to obtain the rights working alongside with the BCTVOA to defray the costs.
