No solid leads in latest Belize City murder

52-year-old Bernadine Lauriano was shot and killed on Friday night.  Her nine-year-old daughter and her son 21-year-old son, Danzel Lauriano were also injured in the incident. Lauriano and her children were shot after nine o’clock on Friday night while inside their Belize City home. ASP Alejandro Cowo told the media what they have gathered so far as they investigate the case.

“Police received the information and as a result of proceeded to 6831 Aloe Vera Street where they made checks inside of the house and observed several expended shells on the scene. What we understand is that Ms.Bernadine and her daughter and another male person were sitting on the couch when a male person just approached the front house by the door area and fired several shots at their direction causing the above injuries. Unfortunately Ms.Bernadine Lauriano succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment on Saturday morning at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. The child was treated and released the following morning. Unfortunately there was a third person by the name of Denzel Lauriano, he is a person with special needs and it was until the following day that the family discovered that he had received a gunshot graze to the right leg. Fortunately he was treated and was released but we know that the target was not at that house at that moment.”

ASP Alejandro Cowo told the media that while police are aware of an ongoing dispute between the family and another group of people, they still have been unable to make any significant progress in the case.

“We know that there is an ongoing dispute between the family of the deceased and the suspet and this goes way back to 2013 and it’s a matter that is always surfacing and that unfortunately escalated to this level with Ms.Bernadine losing her life. However it is very difficult for us and we have to go by the evidence that we have at this moment. Yes the suspects were detained and questioned in regards to that information but unfortunately we had to release them. We know that the public are out there and we appeal to them whatsoever that they have heard or saw to please inform us. It is something that we have to work along with you guys so that we can put a stop  to these shootings that are happening constantly in the City. We ask for your support that anything that you know you can call 9-1-1 and give the information and we will follow it up from there.”

Police detained three persons for questioning, but they have all been released due to insufficient evidence against them. The Belize Association for Persons with Diverse Abilities, BAPDA has extended sympathies to the Lauriano family on the death of Bernadine Lauriano.  According to the release, Lauriano was an active member of the Association and will be remembered for her dedication to her job and being her family primary caregiver.
