Nomination Day: Toledo East Candidates Officially Enter the Race

Preparations for the incoming hurricane did not stop nomination day for the Toledo East constituency. Today, the three candidates vying for the seat in Toledo East were nominated at the Punta Gorda Magistrate Court. First to be nominated was Wil Maheia, candidate for the People’s National Party. Maheia said he is confident he will be victorious, given his track record of service to the Toledo District.

Wil Maheia, People’s National Party Candidate: “I feel very good. I feel very good to serve my community and to give the Belizean people in Toledo East, the voters of Toledo East, an option and a real realistic option. I am running on my record. I have proven myself that I could bring things to Toledo East. You have the Port Honduras Marine Reserve, the forward operating base. I can work across party lines. I can work with this government that’s in there to bring things for the Toledo East. At the end of the day, it’s about the leadership, the leadership of the party and the leadership that is there and the opportunity that exists in Toledo East. We have to do better in Toledo East. For the past 40 years, Toledo East, the villages have not had one single paved street in all of Toledo East which is over 100 miles long. I will change that.”

Next to be nominated was People’s United Party candidate, Dr. Osmond Martinez, who had few words but great confidence in his prospects of securing the seat.

Osmond Martinez, PUP Toledo East Candidate: “Look at this  energy, it’s a renewed energy, renewed vision. We are ready, and the people are ready to come on July 17.”

Reporter: What are your expectations for election day? 

Osmond Martinez, PUP Toledo East Candidate: “My expectation is we will work hard and we will win.”

And finally, United Democratic Party candidate Dennis Williams was nominated. Williams says he feels good about his chances since he is going into the by-election with years of work already completed in the constituency.

Dennis Williams, UDP Toledo East Candidate: “Well on Election Day I expect to be victorious because I’ve been working for the past three years nonstop in Punta Gorda. I was on the ground working for municipal from October up to municipal elections and I kept in touch with my villages because I had to run village council the last cycle of village council so I’ve been working for quite a while now so I expect to be successful because I am born and raised here and everyone knows me and my office is in town so I think I should be okay.”

Nominations were led by returning officer Therese Martinez, and election clerks, Marion Norberto and Venancio Ack. The by-election is set for July 17.
