NTUCB President Says Extensive Work Has Been Made on the OSH Bill

On Thursday we reported the death of security man Nuelmar Garcia. The thirty-five-year-old died after he suffered a fatal blow to the head from a heavy-duty fork. This happened while Garcia was at work which sparked the conversation over the importance of the Occupational, Safety and Hazard, OSH Bill. President of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize, Luke Martinez, extensive progress has been made with the proposed bill.

Luis Luke Martinez, President, NTUCB: “I can tell you that the NTUCB and Chamber agrees on 90% of what’s in that bill, and we agree that there are some areas where the drafters could assist in seeing how it could be cleared up for both parties.  So the NTUCB and Chamber met, I think about two weeks ago. We were on the media together sharing the updates, and so at this point, for the NTUCB, we are having a meeting this weekend, and we expect to have a presentation to our membership on that report that has been put together by the Chamber, NTUCB, and the Representative from the Labour Department. So at NTUCB, we are excited that we’ve managed to reach this far, and it’s just for us to now go back around the table”
