The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) has written to the Social Security Board to raise what it says are deep concerns about several decisions recently made and approved by the SSB. In a letter to the Chair, Nigeli Sosa, the umbrella organization stated “Firstly, we are concerned about a recent decision to employ a Deputy CEO without adherence to proper procedure. The NTUCB does not support this decision, as it appears to have been made without due process for the formal creation of a deputy CEO post, timely budgetary allocation, allowing the first opportunity to current employees and managers at SSB, and allowing an open and the timely advertisement for a vacant post.” The union goes on to say it was not consulted on the decision, which it says undermines the tripartite spirit of the SSB and disregards the important contributions of its representatives in being informed and duly prepared before placing a position on any specific matter. Additionally, the NTUCB says its affiliate, the Christian Workers Union (CWU), has highlighted concerns regarding policies, procedures, and good practices at SSB. In ending, the union calls on the SSB to hold proper consultations and provide the union with a meaningful opportunity for dialogue. The letter was also sent to the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, BCCI President, and the Leader of the Opposition.
