57-year-old, Augustina Elijio is recovering after she was stabbed two times whilst carrying out her duties as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at the Port Loyola Polyclinic in Belize City. The incident took place yesterday just before four o’clock in the evening. Reports indicate that Nurse Elijio was on duty when a mental patient, 28-year-old, Collin Francis who was waiting for medical attention, walked up to Elijio, pulled a knife out of the waist of his pants and stabbed her in the right side of her abdomen and the right side of the chest. Nurse Elijio was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where she underwent surgery. ASP Alejandro Cowo gave the police report on the incident this afternoon.
ASP Alejandro Cowo: “On yesterday’s date at about 4pm police visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where they observed Agustina Eligio a 57-year-old nurse from Port Loyola Health Center suffering from apparent stab wounds to the stomach. What police gathered so far is that Ms. Elijio was at the Health Center when a mental patient arrived and began demanding medication. Whilst she was sitting inside of the health center dealing with other matters the mental patient approached her, pulled out a knife from his pocket and inflicted the stab wounds to her. We are preparing a file and we will forward that file to the DPP’s office for them to advise us as to how to proceed with it.”
The assailant is currently in police custody. Nurse Elijio had retired about two years ago and, as you heard, was recently rehired on contract as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. She has served as Chief Nursing Officer and the Deputy Director for Health Services./////
