A special OAS Permanent Council meeting took place this morning in Washington DC, USA, to bid farewell to Belize’s Nestor Mendez as his term expires. Mendez has been serving as the OAS’ Assistant Secretary General for the past ten years, since July 2015 when he was first elected. Multiple tributes to his great leadership were made by the leaders of member nations, as well as the Vice Chair of the Permanent Council, Ambassador Steve Ferrol and the OAS Secretary General, Albert R. Ramdin.
Mendez took to the podium to express appreciation for the vote of thanks he received over the past ten years. His 23-minute address gave special thanks to his supportive wife, Elvira and children.
Prior to his term at the Organization of American States, Mendez was attached to Belize’s Foreign Service. He had served as the Ambassador to the United States of America, Permanent Representative to the OAS, and the Non-Resident High Commissioner to Canada./
