Oceana continues the fight against gillnets

OCEANA GILNETS

The recent newscasts have been swamped with politics, corruption and crime.   In doing their part, Oceana Belize is making sure that the fight against gillnets is not forgotten.

The recent newscasts have been swamped with politics, corruption and crime.   In doing their part, Oceana Belize is making sure that the fight against gillnets is not forgotten. Today, they issued a press release in which they reminded Belizeans that in December 2019, GOB declared gillnets destructive to the environment. Since then, Oceana has continued to engage with The Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Sustainable Development to explore all potential ways forward on this issue of national importance. However, Oceana stated that Belmopan is proposing a ban with no defined term. The Government is passing on Oceana’s offer to provide one million dollars to support Belizean fishers as they transition away from gillnets. The press release stated, quote, “In order for the ban to be meaningful, GOD must ensure that it will achieve the maximum benefits of a ban to fishers and the country by including terms that guarantee the ban remains intact for a set timeframe… By refusing to provide this guarantee, the government is not just walking away from Oceana’s offer of financial support, it is also short-changing licensed Belizean fishermen.” End quote.
