Three police officers who were accused of extortion back in February this year walked free from the San Ignacio Magistrates Court earlier today. Corporal Maximiliano Lanza and Special Constable Albert Reynolds were both represented by attorney Hurl Hamilton while Special Constable Eusterio Coc was represented by attorney Oscar Selgado. Love News spoke with Attorney Hamilton who told us that his clients will be seeking reinstatement in the Belize Police Department.
Hurl Hamilton, Attorney: “Well what happened in February of this year all three officers were charged with extortion. The allegation was that they took $400 from an individual on the Branch Mouth road in San Ignacio in lieu of foregoing any charges, any criminal charges against this individual. The matter came up for trial today and the prosecution was unable to convince the magistrate that indeed any of the defendants were guilty of extortion. They were unable to satisfy the magistrate that the offence was committed. Well as a result of the outcome I would assume or I would want to think that now they’re going to request that they be reinstated back in the police department except for Corporal Maximilano Lanza who still has a pending police tribunal in relation to the same matter so he cannot at least not now request to be reinstated but the other two Mr.Selgado’s clients Eusterio Coc and Albert Reynolds I would assume that if they would write to the Commissioner of Police for reinstatement as a result of the charges being dismissed against them.”
