One Dead and Several Injured in Major Corozal RTA

A tragic crash yesterday evening claimed the life of a student of the Corozal District. It happened on the Philip Goldson Highway in Ranchito Village and the victim has been identified as 21-year-old Jorge Vargas, an avid football player and student of Escuela Secundaria Técnica México. Vargas was in a ‘busito’ with fellow students who are 20-year-old Aaliyah Marroquin, Armando Patt, Anthony Tzib, Grisel Mesh, Dianira Moradiaga and Jaheem Williams. They received varying degrees of injuries and are hospitalized at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. The driver of the ‘busito’ Carmelo Kau collided with a Toyota Land cruiser ambulance that was driven at the time by Louis Canelo. Inside the ambulance were nurses Victoria Mesh and Misael Loria. As mentioned Vargas was a student of Escuela Secundaria Técnica México and according to dean Hugo Gonzales, the group of students had just departed from the compound and were on their way home.  The Ministry of Health in a press release stated that (quote) the ambulance was transporting a patient from the Corozal Community hospital to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City. Twelve other persons sustained injuries in the accident and are hospitalized at different health facilities countrywide.” (end of quote) The ministry says that it strongly condemns irresponsible driving on the highways and is fully cooperating with the police in the investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
