Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Today, 22-year-old Joshua Martinez’s family would have been preparing for his birthday tomorrow but instead, they are now planning his funeral. Around 4:30 on Saturday morning, Martinez’s vehicle experienced mechanical failure while driving to a nightclub in Ladyville Village. The Belize City resident decided to park on the side of the Phillip Goldson Highway near mile 8 and called a friend for help. That friend was off-duty police officer, David Griffith, who went to meet Martinez and parked on the roadside. The men then began to work on fixing the vehicle when, according to Asp Fitzroy Yearwood, a man driving in the opposite direction slammed into them.
ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer: “Mr.Manuel Ramos was traveling from the direction the 24 Hour Gas Station toward Belize City where he unfortunately collided into one of the vehicles on the scene causing that vehicle to hit Mr.Martinez who died on the spot. Mr.Griffith also received injuries and was transported to the KHMH.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Ramos, who was under the influence of alcohol, has since been charged with Drove motor vehicle without due care and attention, causing death by careless conduct, manslaughter by negligence, and alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit. However, Keisha Zuniga, Martinez’s aunt, says the fact that their loved one was taken away by a drunk driver only make this death far more painful
Keisha Zuniga, Martinez’s Aunt: “I am lost for words hence the reason why I’m taking my time to say what I need to say because it that young man doesn’t know what he did to my family. So – he did a lot especially to my sister hence the reason why I’m here speaking on behalf of her because she is not in right state at the moment to speak to the media. She is not out here to tell people about my nephew so he doesn’t know what he did to my family.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Martinez was self-employed and according to his family he was a hardworking man who was well known for his jovial and friendly personality.
Keisha Zuniga, Martinez’s Aunt: “He worked for himself. He is a DJ. He is always, like Vejea said he’s always on the hustling side. He hosted a lot of shows, he DJs for many different clubs. You know people want parties and so they hire him so he was well known. He was well known.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: ASP Yearwood added that Ramos will also be facing charges for the injuries sustained by Griffith, who remains in the hospital.
ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer: “We know that Mr.Ramos will be receiving additional charges in connection with PC Griffith and another young man that was involved in this accident, a young man Usher who was also on the scene.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Martinez’s aunt says that all-in-all the most devastating aspect of their loved one’s demise is the fact that he never got to celebrate his 23rd birthday with family and friends.
Keisha Zuniga, Martinez’s Aunt: “He would have been 23 years old tomorrow. He was a very jovial person. He’s very amicable. Joshua is very lively. Joshua is very active and Joshua is very free handed. Joshua helped a lot of people. He was always willing. He was always willing to give that extra hand, that lending hand. Whoever knew my nephew knew that he was loved by many.”
