One Dead following RTI on George Price Highway

A road traffic incident on the George Price Highway sometime after 10 p.m. on Friday left one man dead. The incident happened in Camalote Village. Love News was first on the scene, and Correspondent Fem Cruz has the details.

ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer: “Initial investigation revealed that Guillermo Garcia, 50 years Belizean taxi driver, was driving his vehicle in that area and upon approaching mile fifty one and a half he ran over Popper who was lying on the highway. At the time of the accident visibility was poor and Guillermo was detained, served with a NIP and hopefully we will be levying charges upon Mr.Garcia.”

Police Press Officer ASP Fitzroy Yearwood told reporters this morning that the driver of the vehicle is expected to be criminally charged soon.

Fem Cruz, Cayo Correspondent, Love FM News: A hit and run traffic incident on the George Price Highway in the village of Camalote sometime around 9:50 left one man dead. He was later identified as 31 year old Horace Popper, a resident of Sitee River. Love News traveled to the village of Camalote and spoke to the aunt of the deceased Jennifer Harvey.

Jennifer Harvey, Aunt of Deceased: “He traveled all the way from Silk Grass and according to information he was in the hospital and he came out and was walking the road all the way up to Good Living Ranch side but no one knew him and about around nine or quarter to ten he was hit by a truck they said and people say it was a truck that hit him and then came a car behind and ran over him but when I went there the police said no one was allowed in the spot so I just stayed by the road side and watched on. Well we were wondering who it was because then they said it was a white man, they said it was a Spanish man, afterwards they said it was a black man so we just wondered who it was until this morning a lady called me and said that the security guard from hospital he was there when they took him in and he recognized him and they said it was Horace Popper from Silk Grass. I don’t know how to lay him to rest is one and the other is how we could find the money to lay him to rest. I have to deal with my other sisters and so we can know what to do.”

Fem Cruz, Cayo Correspondent, Love FM News: But maybe he will be taken to his hometown.

Jennifer Harvey, Aunt of Deceased: “Well I have to investigate from the other sisters to see what they will do.”
