One Man Dead and Another Injured in Southern Traffic Accident

A man lost his life over the weekend following a road traffic incident in Southern Belize. The victim has been identified as 49-year-old Bartholomew “Panto” Stanley of Hope Creek Village. Police say that Stanley was knocked down and killed by Michael Acosta who was driving his motorcycle near mile nine on the Stann Creek Valley Road. Stanley died on the scene. Acosta, according to ACP Joseph Myvett, has been arrested and served with a notice of intended prosecution.

Marleny Baide, Common-law Wife

Marleny Baide, Common-law Wife: “I saw him from afar. All I saw was a person lying in the middle of the road with his bone pushing out from his foot and his brain out his head.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: And your husband didn’t say what kind of vehicle it was ?:

Marleny Baide, Common-law Wife: “No he never saw because he never expected them to knock him so he never really paid attention to it. Because he said he just felt the vehicle just knock him away.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: And the vehicle knocked the deceased first ?

Marleny Baide, Common-law Wife: “Yes because he was overtaking. Because that area is really dark.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: And the vehicle was coming toward Dangriga ?

Marleny Baide, Common-law Wife: “No it was going that way as well.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: So everybody was going to the west ?

Marleny Baide, Common-law Wife: “Yes.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: So you’re saying that your husband got knocked from behind ?

Marleny Baide, Common-law Wife: “From the side. We would need assistance for his medical expense because his jaws are fractured and his nose, he had serious injuries to the face so they’re supposed to give us info to go to a private doctor.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: So you’re saying that they can’t treat him here nor at KHMH in Belize City ?

Marleny Baide, Common-law Wife: “Nor at KHMH because the doctor here says the doctor they usually refer people who have injuries like that to KHMH the doctor isn’t working there anymore so we have to go see him private and that’s on our own cost and our own expense.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: So you’re asking the public to assist ?

Marleny Baide, Common-law Wife: “I’m asking the public for assistance so that we can get him the medical help as soon as possible.”

What ACP Joseph Myvett reported to the media today is what Michael Acosta told investigators, but it seems that he told his common-law-wife a different story. Marleny Baide says that Acosta told her that Stanley was knocked down and killed by a vehicle that then crashed into him.
