Opposition Alarmed by Minister’s Alleged Political Interference in Corozal Elections

Minister of State, Elvia Vega-Samos is being looked at by the opposition as pulling political strings at Elections and Boundaries in Corozal.  It is a curious situation, not only for the opposition, but for the People’s United Party as there are tensions within over the Corozal Bay Division.  The Guardian Newspaper published a report earlier today, saying that the Deputy Chairman of the United Democratic Party, Alberto August, who also serves as a member of the Elections and Boundaries Commission, is concerned over a recent hire.  According to the publication, Iselda Vega was recently hired as a Registrar for the Corozal Bay division.  In recent weeks, there has been tension within the PUP as Vega-Samos is hoping to retain her standard bearer status and Thea Garcia-Ramirez is aspiring for it.  For the UDP, however, their concern has to do with the supposed involvement of Vega-Samos in getting her sister hired to oversee registration for Corozal Bay.  According to the UDP Chairman, Michael Peyrefitte, they have several reasons to be concerned.

Michael Peyrefitte, UDP Party Chairman: “We have serious concerns especially when siblings of area reps or siblings of contestants for constituencies are working in the registration office. There is a lot that has to be done when a person is registered. You should go and check that the person actually lives there for example. Sometimes that has to take place at night, during the day, whatever. There’s always the fear, the legitimate fear, that if you have someone there who is assisting in a particular capacity then they can bypass all those checks and balances that are required for a person to be registered there. However we would like to know exactly what role the person was playing there. We were informed for example that the relative of somebody in Corozal was employed for just a month, but why just a month ? What was so peculiar about that month to have that person there for just that one month ? And not only that what did that person do ? What was their role ? What was their purpose there ? It just means that we have to be vigilant with our scrutineering, we have to be vigilant with what we are doing to make sure we watch the government, the government watch every aspect. It’s kind of like when you’re playing basketball you would say sometimes to ourselves that from the referee we have to beat. So we have to beat everybody. We have to beat the contestants, we have to beat the registration office, we have to beat everybody. Well okay we have to point it out but we’re not complaining and crying, we will do what we have to do to overcome all of that but it has to be pointed out that these things are happening.”

Chairman Peyrefitte went further to question whether Vega-Samos or the PUP has inserted her Iselda Vega at the Corozal Elections and Boundaries due to a lack of confidence in maintaining her seat.

Michael Peyrefitte, UDP Party Chairman: “And if they are so confident in the support that they have going into the General Elections why do you have to send people there who are relatives ? You mean to tell me nobody else can do that job ? I find that very hard to believe that that person had to be hired there. But as I’ve always said this is politics, this is not church, this is not marbles, this is not jacks and ball this is politics. All it means is that we have to be more vigilant in our scrutineering of what’s going on at these offices. We have to keep the public informed of what’s going on and if we see anything that’s untoward we need to report it and let the Elections and Boundaries Commission know about it. It just means for us, it is another signal for us, another reason for us to make sure that we are stepping up our game and to observe every aspect of the electoral process because we believe that they will stop at nothing to secure what they believe they’re entitled to secure.”

August says that similar appointments have taken place in the Cayo and Orange Walk Districts.  Our newsroom has sought comment on this matter from the Elections and Boundaries Department but a response has not been forthcoming.
