Opposition Demands Apology from Prime Minister Briceno

Opposition Leader has declared that there is now a signature style of Prime Minister John Briceno where he speaks down to individuals.  One specific instance cited was the interview aired on Love News yesterday where PM Briceno suggested that the former union President shut her mouth.

Opposition Leader has declared that there is now a signature style of Prime Minister John Briceno where he speaks down to individuals.  One specific instance cited was the interview aired on Love News yesterday where PM Briceno suggested that the former union President shut her mouth.

Hon.Patrick Faber, Leader of the Opposition, United Democratic Party: Another point that I wish to speak on today is now what seems to be the signature style of the Prime Minister and by extension his government. That of telling the Belizean people whatever comes to his mind. This man, the Prime Minister seems to have no decorum at all. We heard him of course something that he can’t seem to dial back whatsoever we heard him say that the Belizean people has no talent; we’ve heard him in the House of Representatives of course he himself and his favorite guard dog if you will attack our colleagues calling the Honorable Shyne Barrow a jail bird and all kinds of derogatory things, something which our party of course condemns to the fullest there are many young men out there who are looking for a second chance in life and when a senior member of the PUP administration does that in the National Assembly of our country something has got to be said about that. But I am speaking more particularly this afternoon about the Prime Minister’s conduct. I saw him do an interview where he’s referring to another public servant, a lady more significantly at that, saying that the lady should shut up; what kind of decorum is that ? Is that the way a Prime Minister ought to be carrying on and carrying on in public especially and is that the way that a national leader should be speaking about citizens of his country but more particularly members of the public service ? I think not. And so we placed on record and we call on the Prime Minister to change his way. That’s arrogance to the fullest. Nobody is to be talking down to citizens or public servants in this country and we must respect everybody, it is not something that we ought to be taking lightly. You know there was a point in the House where he referred to me as a boy and people like OJ Elrington took to social media to condemn it and there were some who said “Oh that’s nothing.” but we see him going further and further every day speaking in that kind of manner to people in authority and regular citizens in this country and it is absolutely not going to be tolerated.”

Calling on the Prime Minister to apologize was Area Representative for Albert, Tracy Taegar-Panton.

Hon. Tracey Taegar Panton, Area Representative for Albert Division: “I would like to call on Prime Minister to apologize for his blatant disrespect not only to our public servants who must be completely demoralized by this course of action. All they had to do you know was to consult the regulations. All they had to do was to read the regulations. I would ask him to apologize to our public servants and more specifically to the women. You don’t get to be a bully Mr.Prime Minister because you are Prime Minister and your disrespect of Ms.Jackie Willoughby is absolutely unacceptable.”
