Leader of the Opposition, Moses Shyne Barrow, is calling for an audit of the funds allotted to the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU). Barrow has taken multiple issues in the past few years with the LIU, its functions and performance. In his press brief yesterday, Barrow says there needs to be an audit to ensure that persons who are being paid are actually providing a service.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “We are asking for an audit of the LIU. Again, I don’t want to cast any aspersions. I don’t want to say that there’s corruption happening there, but there are people who are pointing things out that are irregular and that could be interpreted as corruption. And so what is better than an audit? An audit will be able to dispel any aspersions and any accusation. So we hope that we will see that because there are many instances of people collecting money that are not even in the country, people that have been deceased and I really think there needs to be a reform of the LIU. We ask that we look at how we can improve the efficacy of the Leadership Intervention Unit and ensure the productivity and actual reform and rehabilitation of the people that are participating in this.”
The LIU was established in 2021 for the purpose of tackling crime and violence in Belize City.
