Belize’s athletes are seeing major success in regional competitions. In recent months, Belize’s national teams and athletes have been able to place in international and regional tournaments held in various sporting disciplines. The success of the athletes has resulted in various donations from the government and private sector to their respective sporting associations. But, according to Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow, there is a need for more investment in the sporting sector. Today, Barrow called on GOB to do more for Belize’s young athletes.
Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “I’d also like to congratulate our athletes who are performing at such a high level. I believe we won another bronze medal last week. I see that the volleyball team is at first place right now the men’s volleyball team the senior. So I’d like to congratulate them and I would like to urge the government as I did in my last press briefing to spend more money on sports. Right? We were spending over 200 million on infrastructure and infrastructure was the demon. It was the devil to the PUP. They used to catch seizures in the House of Representatives talking about infrastructure and you can see many streets being built quietly right here in Belize City. But when Darrell Bradley was building the cement streets they had issues with it. So my thing is, we are the infrastructure leaders of this country, the United Democratic Party. What I’m saying is the PUP government promised to be a government for the working class, for the laborers, for the vulnerable, and they have proven to be anything but. They said that they would spend more money on sports. They ridiculed us for not spending enough on sports, and we’re not seeing that. The only thing good for sports is what we created. The Civic Center.”
