Opposition Leader Calls for Peace in Gang-affected Mesopotamia

The Leader of the Opposition and Mesopotamia Area Representative, Moses “Shyne” Barrow, says he is working to quell the ongoing gang war in his constituency that reportedly led to the murder of Jasmine Domingo. On Monday morning, the 23-year-old mother of two was killed as she slept inside the comfort of her home on Plues Street, and her 4-year-old daughter was injured. Police say the young mother was innocently killed and believe one of her brothers, who are known gang affiliates, was the intended target. Police have now ramped up their presence in the area and say they are actively working to tackle the feud among factions in that area. And according to Barrow, he is also calling on the street figures in his constituency to hash out their differences.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “Well I have reached out to members of the community to let them know that this is intolerable and we cannot countenance the continuation of such violence, because obviously the minister of police and the commissioner of police are hapless and they can’t do anything to solve our crime problem. So we as a constituency, we as a community have to take matters into our own hands. So I have impressed upon the different figures in the community that when it comes to mothers, children that has to be the line, the invisible red line that can never be crossed and that line has been crossed and now is the time to stop. Has to be, if there’s no other impetus for us to come together and figure out a way forward that does not include the genocide, because that is what we are doing. We are killing out ourselves on the south side of Belize City in particular, and it must stop. And we cannot expect that the Minister of Police or the Commissioner of Police have the capacity to solve crime because they’ve proven to be totally incompetent in that regard. And so the deterrence that you would expect from swift arrests and convictions and people serving long sentences due to the commission of such heinous crimes is just not the reality of Belize. So no one is deterred, no one fears any consequences to their actions. So I am doing my part as area representative to appeal to the different figures in the community that the invisible line has been crossed and it has to stop.”

Given that traditionally the Mesopotamia Constituency has been a stronghold for the UDP, Barrow was asked if he feels his predecessor failed in addressing the area’s chronic gang violence.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “When you campaign to become elected and you form the government and you have the ministerial powers, the ministerial resources at your disposal then it is for you to implement the solutions that will prevent a young mother being executed in her house at 3 AM in the morning and that child that was with her, her daughter, being shot as well. We have to deal with now. For 40 years there can be enough blame shared on successive governments, but we are here now. We have a government now. I can guarantee you that when I am prime minister of this country, no young mother is going to be executed in her home at 3 a.m. in the morning. We need to get tough on those that are committing these heinous crimes. We need to have a comprehensive policy. This garden variety, multi-sectoral approach that we have heard about, we have seen no results. And the way life works, if I’m driving in a certain direction and I’m not getting anywhere, maybe I’m headed in the wrong direction. So I need to make a left or make a right or just reverse course and go back from the way that I was driving and maybe make a detour here or there. There needs to be a pause and a reset because the Minister of Police that we have is failing. And the deflection tactic of going back to Curl Thompson or going back to Said Musa, what Said Musa did to create Majestic Alley or what Dean Barrow or what Michael Finnegan did, that won’t help us.”

Barrow also offered his deepest condolences to the family on behalf of the United Democratic Party.
