Opposition Leader Criticizes Electricity Crisis as “Disgraceful”

Moving on to other national concerns, particularly, the regular power outages, Opposition Leader Barrow sat in his office this afternoon with no electricity, referring to the country’s energy crisis as a disgrace.  According to Barrow, it is a situation that calls for heads to roll at Belize Electricity Limited.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “It is appalling and completely deplorable that we have reached this position. I appreciate Mr.Mencias’ honesty but someone needs to be fired. Someone needs to be held accountable. What has Micho Chebat been doing since he took on the portfolio at PUC ? Where is Fortis? Where is the billion dollar company Fortis who I see posting on Facebook that they are making arrangements to get energy from the dam and they’re doing all types of things. Why hasn’t this been a discussion for the last four years ? And again it is quintessential People’s United Party governance no consultation, no inclusion. The Opposition and other stakeholders should be at the table. So for us to be here now with John Mencias the CEO of BEL saying ‘Well you know for ten years we knew that we had this problem but no one did anything is absolutely deplorable. It is devastating to the health sector, to the tourism sector, to the economy which is driven by our tourism and someone needs to be held accountable. There istten that 75 megawatts. We could pay $200 million dollars when it’s time to settle debts or acquire assets that were given to PUP cronies. We can pay to settle debts in different occasions but we cannot make sure that we have energy security ? Shame on the People’s United Party.’

In yesterday’s BEL press conference, CEO John Mencias explained that they had ventured into a failed project that only garnered some 8 megawatts of power.  Shyne Barrow says he fails to understand how the current administration could be in government for the past three years, and still have made no progress in energy supply.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “I was astonished when I heard Mr.Mencias the I don’t know if he’s the CEO of BEL say that this problem has been in the pipeline for ten years. That he put out a request for 75 megawatts back in 2013 and or there was a – because I’m not sure if he was the CEO at that time but there was a request for 75 megawatts back in 2013 but what we can say is that he was the CEO for the last five years. Three and some change of which has been under the People’s United Party and for the life of me I cannot comprehend, fathom, appreciate why an administration that claims to be so head of the curve whose Scam Belize manifesto actually talked about energy security, who borrowed $155 million dollars from the Saudis last year would not be ahead of this. This is another example of the failed People’s United Party government.”
