Opposition Leader Criticizes Government’s Hypocrisy Over New Construction Plans
Today’s press conference focused on the current and recent expenditure of the SSB Investment Fund, but particularly on the announcement made in September, of two new buildings to be constructed on Chetumal Boulevard near the Eleanor Hall Building. Opposition Leader harped repeatedly on how the current administration had criticized the idea of the Eleanor Hall Building when they had just taken office. Fast forward today, however, and two new buildings are now being planned for the same area. According to Barrow, the government is once again practicing hypocrisy.
Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “This is the same government when we built the Eleanor Hall project over there in Lake Independence they complained. I think Julius Espat got up in the house and cried. Literally, he cried and said, how could we take, now this was Petro Caribe money, I believe. This was from BIL if I’m not mistaken. This was not Social Security money. This was not the taxpayers money. This was from the BIL vehicle with the Petro Caribe funding and we built this building in Lake Independence, which I thought was a good idea. But to this day, the member from Lake Independence say that was a waste of money. So explain to me now how this government is borrowing $40 million dollars from the taxpayers social security financing to build a building that they said we didn’t even need the first building now we need two more buildings because it is $40 million, 40 change there was a $20 million that they put out but they’re afraid to tell you about the next $20 million then we just saw another $6.5 million that was gazetted. I know that is for another crony but instead we’re building buildings that Julius Espat, that Cordell Hyde said we did not need. The $30 million that the Barrow administration spent on the Eleanor Hall building was a waste. So now we’re coming with $40 million dollars, $45 million dollars to build two more. What we need is to rescue the Belizean people from the highest cost of living ever. We need to rescue the businesses that are closing. So that means the people that they hire lose jobs. That’s what we need to do.”
As it relates to the criticisms by Minister Julius Espat, on the Eleanor Hall Building, our archives showed that they were based on the integrity of the structure, and not on the actual idea. We will air other areas of today’s press conference throughout the next few newscasts. Among those topics were the recent comments by the Prime Minister on the invasion of Guatemala, as well as a protest the UDP is planning for Friday, October 13.
