Opposition Leader Demands Apology from PUP Candidate Over Controversial Remarks

Leader of the Opposition Moses Barrow is demanding an apology from the People’s United Party’s Candidate for Toledo East, Dr. Osmond Martinez. Barrow lashed out at Martinez today for not being a true Belizean, because of his birth in Honduras. The LOO also spoke about what he says were disrespectful statements made by Martinez while on the campaign trail. According to Barrow, the former CEO of Economic Development made grave accusations against the Belize Defense Force and must ask for forgiveness.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “I shared with the media where he said that BDF soldiers raped the women in Bella Vista and chased them to the banana farm and then shipped the men off to Melchior. These are reprehensible lies and the opposition UDP calls on Osmond Martinez and the People’s United Party to apologize forthwith. It is deplorable. It is despicable that someone who wants to serve in the National Assembly would be so desperate to reduce our patriots, the BDF women and men  who give of themselves, who risk their lives, who sacrifice their family, sacrifice so much for us. They should not be involved in our politics. If they want to attack the candidate, they want to attack me, they want to attack the party fine. We’ll deal with that, that is what we signed up for. But our women and men in the armed forces have no place in politics. And so to tell those lies with no proof, with no evidence. When he said it, we researched. He said that the UN was a part of it. All types of horrendous lies. And we denounced that type of politicization of the BDF and that type of defamation and we call on Martinez to apologize and withdraw those statements.”

Barrow further claimed that Dr. Martinez is a Belize City resident.
