Opposition Leader Moses Shyne Barrow Calls for Protest Amidst Accusations of Social Security Fund Mismanagement
Leader of the Opposition, Moses Shyne Barrow, is inviting residents to protest in Belmopan next Friday. His invitation comes during a press conference this morning where he accused members of government of looting monies from Social Security Board. Barrow lashed out at senior members of the Briceno administration, alleging that they are once again involved in the mismanagement of monies from the Social Security fund. The opposition leader spoke on a list of investments being made by the SSB which he says are not feasible nor viable.
Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “It is extremely troubling, disturbing that we are seeing a replay of the People’s United Party looting of the Social Security Board finances. And it could not have been written -this is a nightmare. A nightmare from Briceno Street. And the script could not have been written to be more frightening than it is now because when you look at the players involved in the looting of the social security funds that belong to the Belizean people, that should be there for the Belizean people when they retire so that they can have something to sustain them. When you look at the players that were involved it’s the same names for these same types of loans that we are seeing now using the people’s money to give to cronies and political hacks. You look at the mortgage Securitization Project $78 million. You look at the $16 million that was used to pay Glenn Godfrey’s mortgage. You look at Courtenay, the father, who took $3.1 million from Social Security. I believe he was the chair of Social Security at the time and got a loan for $3.1 million that he never paid back. That he was taken to court, he was arrested and tried, he prevailed in a criminal court but in the civil court he lost the proceedings and when the PUP came back into government they dropped it. They refused to collect. that $3.1 million dollars. So when the United Democratic Party sees every time we turn some type of loan being secured by the People’s United Party to do some project for some crony, we have to sound the alarm.”
Opposition Leader Barrow went further by saying that the money at the SSB should be invested in assisting small and medium businesses who are struggling to remain open.
Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “It is corruption, it is looting of the taxpayers dollars in the context, in the backdrop of the highest inflation and cost of living that we have ever seen. So now when the social security finances are supposed to be there for people when they retire, when they have worked their entire lives and they come to the end of that period, instead of using that money to create a fund to lend all the businesses that are going out of business, that are closing, whether it’s Smiling Meats, whether it’s Santiago Castillo, whether it’s the Miss Perez on Raccoon Street in front of the police station that can’t afford to stay open anymore. All of these small businesses, these MSMEs and different businesses that need a bailout, why not take the same 60 million, 70 million in funding that they’ve borrowed within the last couple of months from the SSB to make it available to the same Belizean taxpayers who create that fund based on the monies that they’ve paid, increased monies by the way, because the payment scheme was increased. Why aren’t we using the taxpayers’ money to help the taxpayers?”
