Opposition Leader Shyne Barrow Calls for Peace Amid Israel Conflict

Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow also weighed in on the prayer march for Israel held in Belmopan yesterday. Barrow stresses that the conflict and the resulting deaths need to stop and is calling for both sides to come to a peaceful resolution. He added as a future leader of Belize he must maintain a degree of neutrality.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition:I think there’s some media bias when it comes to this topic. You know one of the highlights of that is when two former Prime Ministers, two foreign ministers, other members of Cabinet currently and previous all of them came out only mustered about two hundred people I heard someone from the great Channel 7 criticizing the turn out that it was only two hundred when that was about the same amount that the March for Palestine had. Listen I would prefer a march for Israel and Palestine. I would prefer that we get together all of us get together and march for peace, march for an end to terrorism, march for a two state reality. So I did not participate in the march that the churches put together because I don’t believe that as the next Prime Minister of Belize I should be showing any favoritism, any type of bias. I should always be above the fray and be a bridge, be a voice of reason, a voice of objectivity and not take any sides and so I was definitely mindful of practicing that and not showing any favoritism so I am happy that another side of the story is being told. I’m happy that both demonstrations have been peaceful and people have been able to exercise how they feel on both sides of it. The United Democratic Party remains in the middle and we continue to call for humanitarian alleviation, we continue to call for an end to the military operations and an end to terrorism and a release of all the hostages and a two state solution.”

Barrow added that he feels there should be a citizen-led march for Belize initiative that enjoys the same level of bi-partisan support shown at the march for Palestine last week.
