Orange Walk Braces for Protests as Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association Members Stand Firm in Negotiations

While the association remains in negotiations, its members are ready to protest in Orange Walk Town. The BSCFA says that if they cannot reach a compromise this weekend, they are taking to the streets once more, this time with greater numbers. Alfredo Ortego, BSCFA’s vice chairman, says the farmers completely support the association and are willing to hold out on delivering cane until they have an agreement that suits their demands.

Alfredo Ortega, Vice Chairman, BSCFA: “We will continue our presence. We have our farmers with us and we will continue demonstrating, we will continue showing our Prime Minister and BSI that we are in solidarity and we have the support of the different unions that are here with us supporting us. So we are strong and we continue in that fashion. Our farmers are strong and our farmers are there awaiting that we can negotiate something that will be beneficial to them. Our farmers understand because from long ago our farmers have been suffering and they know what is happening and that is why they are clamoring that they are not prepared to start any crop unless we can get a signature that will be beneficial to all our farmers that we represent here in the BSCFA. Our farmers are very clear with us, the leadership, that they are supporting the move and they’re there to support us because they have seen that we are not alone we have the support of the other unions and that makes our farmers stronger in their feelings in what they want to get.”

While the law requires a thirty-six-hour notice of protest, the police department says it is willing to make an exception and allow the BSCFA to provide one hour of notice before taking to the streets.
