On Easter Sunday, reports are that nine men went to Progresso in a canoe. Late that evening, while in the water, the canoe capsized. All passengers resurfaced except thirty nine year old Hermilindo Mai. His body was retrieved an hour later. Superintendent Dennis Arnold, Officer in Command at Corozal says that they do not suspect foul play.
“Police responded to a report of a suspected drowning in Progresso village in the Corozal District. Upon arrival police saw a search party looking for a male person that had went underwater and had never resurfaced. About an hour later the body was retrieved. His name was learnt to be Hermelindo Mai, a 39-year-old of Orange Walk town. Initial investigations revealed that Mai along with eight other persons were in a canoe when the canoe capsized. Mai went under and did not resurface. His body now lies at the Northern Regional Hospital awaiting a post mortem. We had done our canvassing in the area and everyone was saying the same thing especially the persons who were along with him in the canoe, we do not want to speculate at this time but after the post mortem we will be able to answer that question.”
The body awaits a post mortem examination.
