The victim of the boat accident, 30-year-old Oscar Cornel, was an active member of his community. He was the Trial Farm Village Councillor responsible for sporting activities. According to the Chairlady of Trial Farm, Patty Witzil, Cornel was working for Nautilus Express Water Taxi in Caye Caulker.
Patty Witzil, Chairlady, Trial Farm Village Council: “Well Oscar Cornel was a part of the Trial Farm Village Council for three years. Well I can say that he was a very active member in the council in the way of sports, he was the sports organizer and recently we had a marathon and he was the organizer of it. Also we had many other events like the cleanup campaigns so he was always there willing to work without saying no, he was always there willing to work, he was a great person. He was a happy person, a very energetic man, always willing to help the people without pay because in the village council we didn’t get paid, it was voluntary work and he didn’t complain he was always willing to help in any way he could for any reason we needed him he was always there. He was a kind person, he was very active in the village council, always with new ideas for the village for this coming new year, he had many plans that we will follow in his memory. I send my condolences to the Cornel family and friends and also condolences to the Trial Farm Village Council because this is sad news that we won’t see him again in this year that is coming and we’re getting in. He will be missed by all of us.”
Cornel leaves behind his two sons, ages seven and three.
