Other Sugarcane Associations Condemn BSCFA’s Highway Blockage Amidst Harvest
As we reported, the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) has entrusted the northern caucus to lead the negotiations on their behalf with BSI/ASR. Interestingly, while the members of the BSCFA are out protesting, the other sugarcane associations have been busy harvesting and delivering their yield to the mill. In light of all that is happening, the other cane farmers associations issued a release condemning the road blockage. The Progressive Sugar Cane Producers; the Corozal Sugar Cane Producers, and the Northern Sugar Cane Growers’ Association came together, and sent out a release saying, quote, “Following deliberations on crop start with the BSCFA, stakeholders agreed to initiate the Sugar Cane Crop season on December 28, 2023. Members of all three of our associations have been delivering their produce to the mill and providing jobs to cane cutters. We strongly condemn the actions of BSCFA to block the Philip Goldson highway at Buena Vista, which prevents our farmers from their constitutional right to deliver their produce to the mill. We call on the government and relevant authorities to ensure that our associations are guaranteed safe unimpeded passage to the mill. We recognize the importance of the industry to our farmers, the north and the nation. We have acted responsibly within the laws, to ensure that we contribute to the nation’s economic stability and continued development.” End of quote.
