The Office of the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children has strongly condemned the murder of Wendy Mendez,a victim of domestic violence. In a press release, the office expressed deep outrage and sorrow over the incident, calling it a stark reminder of the growing crisis of gender-based violence in Belize. The murder, which occurred during Women’s Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the contributions and resilience of women, has been described as especially heartbreaking. Instead of honoring women, the country is mourning yet another victim of senseless violence. In the statement, they expressed “This crime not only devastates families but also undermines our collective sense of security,”. Beyond legal action, the office called on the wider community to speak up, intervene, and support victims in escaping abusive situations. The Special Envoy’s office reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of all Belizean women. As Women’s Month continues, authorities and activists are urging the public to take a stand against gender-based violence, recognizing that every attack on a woman threatens the fabric of Belizean society.
